Literature Text

Masks are worn
Lines are read
Do what you must do
And do it with flourish
Things are demanded of you
Though you don't understand why
Do what you must do
And do it without question[ing]
Be still off to the side
Be silent in the background
Do what you must do
And do it quietly
All are actors
All perform
We do what we must do
And we do it for others
Not out of kindness
But to make an impression
Or rather
To fit the impression
To fill the mold
To stay in character
Do what you must do
But do only that
And nothing more.

Some people take their places behind
They creep around backstage
Between scenes
They do what they must do
So the others can take the spotlight
These people are the ones in black
The ones that cannot be seen
And should not be heard
But they hold the entire show in their hands
Their hidden hands
Clad in black
They are the ones to beware of
With a flick of their shadowed wrists
A sleight of gauzy hand
They can turn your world upside down
All have a part to play
This is life in theatre
This is life
This is.
I wrote this at rehearsal one day...I don't really like the end. At all. btw, I was feeling used when I wrote this. In case you can't tell.

There is such an intense musical undertone here. The poem itself is so beautifully dark, and almost threatening. And yet, that sadness is still evident. It's the bitter anger that remains after a lover has left, or friend has passed away. An unbridled anger at the world for existing as it is, and yet there is still beauty in that anger. It is something so pure that it can hardly be expressed in words, and, yet, you manage to do it well here. I am touched by this piece.
